Regenexx PL Injectate – A Blood-Based Procedure Similar to Platelet-Rich Plasma, but with Preferred Characteristics for Many Orthopedic Uses.
“Lysate” comes from the Latin word lysis, which translates as “to break open.” So Platelet Lysate is made up of platelets that have been broken open in some way. Platelets contain alpha granules, which are small packets where their growth factors live. When you break open a platelet, the growth factors are released all at once rather than being released over a longer term. As a result, you can benefit from a higher dose of growth factors, in a shorter period of time, with a platelet lysate (PL) than if you used platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Similar to an immediate release pill, which releases a drug more quickly than a sustained release pill that releases a drug over a longer timeframe. Platelet Lysate is made possible by utilizing a flexible Regenexx lab platform, which allows us to customize our regenerative orthopedic solutions to best meet the patient’s needs.
How We Use Platelet-Rich Plasma vs. PL Injectate?
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a good solution for treating mild arthritis in joints, ligament tears, or small tendons. We’ve found that Platelet Lysate has preferred characteristics for use around nerves. For this reason, it is used extensively in the spine, where we encounter irritated nerves due to disc bulges. It’s also a useful option for treating nerve-related issues like carpal tunnel syndrome, or other similar types of conditions.
